Football and 'Patriotism'

And I'm talking the soccer kind here.

I've just been forced to sit through the first England game in the world cup. How can anyone actually enjoy this 'sport'?!? It's nothing but a load of overpaid eejits running up and down a field kicking a ball and (more often than not) diving over fake 'injuries' (which they of course recover from straight after getting a free kick awarded to them. Lying b@$^@£ds). There's no planning, there's no intelligence, everything is done on the fly, it's just people improvising where to kick a ball - it's just plain boring!

On another note close to my heart, the 'patriotism' shown during the world cup is sickening. There's flags out on people's cars, hanging from the windows of their houses, all showing allegiace to England. How many people are like this when the football isn't on? More to the point, how many people actually know when St. George's Day is?!? AAAARRRGGH!!!! I'm sure Glas knows when St. Andrew's day is, and EVERYONE seems to know when st Patrick's day is. Why are we left out?!? (In case you're wondering, St. George's day is April 23rd)

Roll on Superbowl XLI - time for a decent sport to be broadcast on British TV again!

Football is like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. I don't take it too seriously but I think it is a great game.

Knowing when St. Georges day is doesn't really mean anything, it is just a day, you could tell the masses to get wasted and fly flags any day of the year. Those fans you saw are following their country's representatives of a national sport. Getting drunk on St. Georges day means nothing compared to what those fans are doing, we're proud to be English and we're showing it in a way we don't often get to.

Wow, this really warms my heart . My mom just went over to soccer so I needed this, thank you ReeKorl, thank you.

She doesn't like the violence and the order of the sport from what I gathered.

I was starting to think you were a Scotsman for a minute........

I'm not a mad fan, but I do enjoy the World Cup. And I agree with the play acting, but I believe the referees have been told to clamp down. Interestingly, a Serbian player was tackled in a match this afternoon, then got up, waved a fist at the ref insisting that the tackiling player be booked...........and was then booked himself!

BTW St Andrews day is 30th November but most Scots prefer Robert Burns' birthday!

I'm not a sports fan, but I want to watch the world cup.

To sinclair_tm: Tomorrow (Monday) on ESPN2 they are playing matches. At 8 CST it is Aussieland versus Japan.

I saw the ending of the Serbia & Montengro versus Holland and I must say this: the game sucked. I thought soccer *football* was a fast paced game where the teams are constantly running up and down. No. They barely moved, going up and down on the court was terribley slow, and it wasn't very interesting. But I rooted for the losing team S&M.

I really want to see the USA versus the Czech Republic because no one that I know even watches soccer, including me, so I have no idea how good we are.

But it is really strange how the world cup nationalizes everyone, stops wars, closes schools, etc..... it's just a sport for Pete's sake!!!

I am going to qualify this by saying that if I had to watch any sport on TV, it would be Ohio State football. I bleed scarlet and gray and my turds are made of buckeyes.

That being said, I am soccer guy. I even refer to it as football to all of my euro friends. I like the intensity. I like the build up. I like holding my breath when the ball is played across the goal mouth. I groan when my guys choke and cheer when it goes in. I hate the play acting and wish that my country was as upbeat as yours.

Perv. :P

I was only concerned with the NBA semi-finals because the San Antonio Spurs were playing.

I used to play soccer a long time ago when I was really young, but haven't since. I don't like it too much either. I like to watch hockey and football. I don't mind watching Nascar as long as it's a comfy couch and no one will disturb my beauty sleep.

Then the stupid Americans just lost 3-0. This is surprising because (I mean no offense here -> ) with all of the people from Latin America that we have in this country, it seems we'd do awesome. But we lost

Intresting topic for me indeed since I'm a soccer fan and sorry ReeKorl coz I disagree with you.

I have played many sports (basketball, volleyball, handball) in addition to soccer and I have found out that soccer is by far much more exciting than any of the rest.

ReeKorl, I do understand your extreme reaction since the English team didn't play well at all the first couple of matches but I guess watching soccer is much more enjoyable when you know the players on the field and the history of the playing teams also the coaches and the way they think, all of these factors add to the experienc of watching soccer. sometimes the coach wants to spare a player for the second match, other times he just wants a tie.

True that sometimes players fake injury but thats not always the case, Michel Owen had to fly back to UK due to a knee injery.

I chear for England (I'm not english myself) and I'd say that the game between England and Sweden yesterday was a great one (though I wanted england to win) but the goal by J.Cole was just brilliant.

game, after game, after game, I realized what was most important in my life... Football. Show me something more thrilling than a perfect volley, tell me you never dreamt of the emaculate strike, or being part of that moment where an entire nation hold its breathe, tell me that football is not our one common language when the whole planet stops for 90 minutes to be a witness to one thing we all understand. Yea, you can tell me that I'm wrong. Some may say its just a game....but this is about heroes and tribes, loyalty and devotion, it's our commitment and our passion, our battle and our belief. As the late, great Bill Shankly once said

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death.
I'm very disappointed with that attitude.
I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."
