It's impossible to put a figure on it. Losing your connection during an online game or an update can be inconvenient, but won't do any harm to the system. What kind of problems do you have in mind?

Well... I was referring to a "permanent" loss of internet connectivity. Like broken broadband configuration

Let's face it. PC's and internet connections, once working, are very relaiable. Unless and until I do something to disrupt it. So again, the bigest culprit is the operator.

I've had a few drop outs but in 4-5 years of broadband I've not been off line for more than a day - ever.

That something is what I'm interested in.

For some reason, people constantly answer me about the cause of the problem when I'm asking about the problem itself.

i might be wrong, but what i see being asked is,

when computers have problems, and need servicing, what is the likelyhood that it will have no internet connectivity.

my answer is about 50% and here is why...

power supply failure,
hard disk failure,
motherboard/cpu failure
ram failure
modem/network card failure

all those are common, and also, will obviously result in internet failure.

Interesting. But do you really think that the problems you mentioned account for 50% of all computer related problems ?

I have found children and spouses can cause loss of conectivity. But I guess that's back to users again!

Unless you consider them an integral part of your PC ;)

Hi Krus and welcome to TSF.

I do not consider them integral - they should not be allowed anywhere near my PC!!

It's never their pc... When they break it, it becomes our problem
Anyways, the connections nowaday are really stable, unless user forgets his password (or decides to change it, since dialers tend to remember passwords nowadays)...
The only possible causes i've met of true disconnection are either hardware failures, or ISP-related mess (especially when ISP insists on his own access module). Ah, yes, user paranoia too (overconfigured firewalls, for instance)

But if you consider a severe interference to the connection to be a loss of connectivity (like spyware infestations, popup windows etc), then it's spread rises sharply...

Honestly, my problem was with squirrels!!

They ate through some wire and it resulted in massive internet connection loss, for weeks at a time!!! I seriously was offline for 2 and a half weeks last summer.

It's not nice to call users that
(In fact, users chew wires sometimes, but network cables are usually too low and behind the CPU... Cats can be a problem, though)
