Hello
Hello all
Although I have known about this site for several years, decided to stop lurking and join. Where to begin? First I am 56 and not afraid of computers or its technology. I am willing to learn as much as I can for both business and pleasure. Business: For the past 35 years, I have helped run a 50 year old family Arms and Armour business my husband started as a young man. Have become its chief researcher, art designer/artist, clerk, computer geek and chief bottle washer while raising our two children to 20 "somethings". My husband is something of a "luddite" but sees computers as a necessary business too. Prefers talking on the phone rather than spending time writing emails. So prefers to stay in his blacksmith shop and leaves all the computer "stuff" to me. I was introduced to early computers while in college back in the early 70s (Fortran). But it was not until 1993 when I was introduced to "new" computers by a friend with a 286. Learned some DOS programming from her and about early gaming. Finally got a computer of our own (HP 120 Win95) Been online since about 1996 when our rural provider finally switched from a BBS (remember those?) to Dialup Internet service. I have found the Internet an ever evolving tool for what we needed as more museums opened their collections and countries, their borders. As a "window" and magic carpet to places I only read about before. Although I do not normally go to "chatrooms", I do enjoy "chatting" while in a favorite pc game. Old enough to still get a "kick" knowing I am speaking...in real time....to someone halfway across the globe. Rather like still getting a chill watching the Apollo landing on the Moon when you remember watching it as it actually happened. (Was 7 when Sputnik went up and all the "hoorah" about that too.) Pleasure (Games): As a gamer, computers have come a very long ways since "Pong" or "Asteroids". I had played Nintendo games with my kids as they grew up, so going to computer games was not hard. My programmer friend introduced me to D&D "Pools of Radiance" at first. Then later it was Castle Wolfenstein and DOOM. Then to other genres. Watched game developers and communities push the boundaries of what PCs (and MACs) could do with imagination, skills and more. Eight years ago, I was asked to become an Administrator of an "Official PC gamesite" (Human Head Studios' Runegame.com). This gave me an inside understanding about the gaming industry with both its joys and some its troubles. As a gamer and through my own community, I have met many young gamers who act more mature than some older gamers. Have more sense to know what is "real" from "reel", so to speak. However, As a parent, I do believe some games may not be suitable for every age. Yet, I would be lacking if I did not know what my kids were playing. Computer games should not be "babysitters" and it does help for the parent to know what is being played. But at the same time, I DO NOT believe violent games lead to violence "outside of the box" as touted by some government "nay sayers". They are looking for a quick fix for their own agenda instead of any real reasons. Having grownup playing some very "violent" kids games (Cops&Robbers, Cowboy&Indians, WW2 "Wargames", Dodgeball, Tag et.c) and watched my share of violent movie/TV shows that would make present day "PC" cringe......it's a wonder my generation have survived at all. Commonsense, however is not so "common" and just how many do show any sense at all when ignorant? Knowledge is the key that unlocks ignorance. Stupidity is when the lock stays closed after the key thrown away. But enough of my soapbox. Looking forward to reading meeting you all here. While learning to unlock any computer ignorance I still may have. There is always something to learn. |
