Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
We are down to 18 active members on the team. We need to come up with something to renew interest. Any ideas?

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
Well, I can tell you that this post helped get me back on board.
![]() Would it be possible to put up a forum wide announcement similar to the one posted 02-01-09 'Signature, Picture & Misc Permissions' by Horse. I know I haven't been here long but that is the first time I can remember an announcement being put up in the Hardware Forum. If that can be done for F@H it might catch more eyeballs. Pauldo |

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
please do a big F@H announcement!
I'm folding along really fast on 353point units it takes me 38 seconds per percentage point = 63 minutes per unit (most of the time it these units) on 511 point units it takes me 86 seconds per percentage point = 143 minutes make sure to market it to the people who hate diseases too! I find that F@H is really good benchmarking tool for Graphics cards and CPU's, you can market it like that. its just that since 6.23 came a lot of people had problems and they stopped because they just gave up. I had problems too but I like a little friendly competition and helping cure diseases! |

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
its an application that uses either CPU cycles or GPU cycles depending on the type of F@H program that does protein folding (changes in the protein).
The server sends you a work unit your computer does the simulation worth a certain amount and then when its completed you send it back and get a the points. The points refer to the size of the workunit and how long it will folded |

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
I gave up with the beta for that reason and went back to the standard programs.

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
When I was running the SMP, I ran the Linux client in VMware and had very little problems. The Windows client was troublesome though. The GPU client has ran very well, with only one issue in the entire time I've been running it, and that was due to buggy WU.
As for drumming up interest, I was thinking we could have a little competition using subteams. We could have a team for each TSF Team (MS, Hardware, Gaming, Security, etc.) We could have a two week recruiting period and run the competition for a 3-4 weeks. The team with the most points at the end of the competition wins. |

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
I'm uding GPU2 6.23 console client with my 20% overclocked GTX 260
old memory bandwidth = 111.6gb/s overclocked memory bandwidth = 136.6 gb/s I don't think people will join up right away and won't be very regular with using program. IU think I was trying the CPU client first till I found GPU2 client and that client only uses up around 15% of my processor but video card is working overtime. post a sticky we need more Folding along people! |

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
I like the contest idea.
I was trying to come up with some kind of prize but couldn't figure out how to disperse a mini keg of beer. I just switched to the GPU2 client, myself, and man is it faster. Of coarse now my comp is like a pizza oven. New fan is on the way. Pauldo |

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
I am interested in how a contest would work. Would it still be one TSF team, but with someone at TSF crunching the data into sub-team points? And what for those who don't fall neatly into a division of TSF?
It would have to be at least 2 to 3 weeks, as newcomers may want to battle with the betas for max scores, and that will take time. But an exciting idea. Last edited by EnglishPaul; 02-10-2009 at 12:14 PM. |

Re: Need Ideas to Renew Interest In F@H
I have an old case that came from a computer I bought back in 2000 from a local company. I just have been upgrading components from time to time. Heat was never an issue until I put the 4850 in there. I am going to try a pci slot fan and see what it does. If it doesn't work than I will break down and get a new case. Probably should just do that anyways as I am putting parts together for a security camera dvr and will need a case here shortly.
As for the contest, I was referring to the one mattlock suggested. You're right, results would be highly dependant on what program you are using but it might bring out some friendly competition. Who knows, it might even bring some people on board just because of the competition. |

Quote:
The way subteams work is everyone on a given subteam would run F@H under one "User Name", but you still use the TSF "Team Number" 85015. So if you were to create a subteam named Ringo's Stars, everyone in the team would simply change the User Name in the F@H configuration to Ringo's Stars and leave the Team Number set to 85015. All folding points during the competition period would be credited to "Ringo's Stars". After the competition is over you change your "User Name" back to "EnglishPaul" and your points are once again credited to your name. The head to head forum competition is only a suggestion. Of course any group of people wanting to form a team would be welcome, or you join the team of the forum in which you are most active. Competition is always fun, but at the end of the day it's all about the contribution to science and every little bit helps. |
