My System

[SOLVED] I need to automatically launch a command window on reboot with admin privele

I need to automatically launch a command window on reboot with admin priveleges.....

Here is basically what I need to do:

I run this program Folding@Home that can be run only in a console window (the high performance version of the program).

Here is what I do manually to make it run:
1. I launch a command window running it as the administrator.

2. I then cd to the root and then change to a folder in the root that has my program.

3. I type in the name of the executable with a flag - "fah -smp"

This console window stays running 24/7.

Note:
This particular high performance version of the program cannot be run as service on Vista. This means it has to be run in a console window.

How can I accomplish the above by having it do this automatically from the startup group whenever the pc reboots so that I don't have to do it manually? It only takes a couple of seconds to do it manually, however if I am not at the pc when it does a reboot, I want it to start automatically.

TIA!

Hey,

Now here we go.

Log on as an admin, click the Start button, type Task Scheduler in the Start Search box, and press [Enter].
Once Task Scheduler is up and running, you can create a new task for your UAC restricted program.

In order to schedule a task to run CMD at startup, begin by clicking the Create Task item in the Actions panel. When the Create Task dialog box appears, you値l assign the task a name in the Name box and type a description in the Description box.
At the top of the Security Options panel, you should see your administrative user account.

Next, select the Run With Highest Privileges check box and leave all the other settings in the default configuration.

Now, you値l need to configure an Event Trigger. To do so, select the Trigger tab and then click the New button. When you see the New Trigger dialog box, select At Log On from the Begin The Task dropdown. Select the Specific User or Group option. Leave all the other settings in the default configuration and click OK.

At this point, you値l specify CMD/Folding@Home as the Action. To do so, select the Action tab and then click the New button. When you see the New Action dialog box, click the Browse button and locate the needed file (CMD/Folding at home if there is a way of launching that ?). If you look at the shortcut for CMD/F@H, does it include any argument? If so you type them in the Add Arguments box. Leave all the other settings in the default configuration and click OK.

Now Restart your PC

Hi Jay, thanks for the feedback!

One question - regarding your first piont to log on as the administrator. When I installed Vista I only setup one account - I forget what type of account it was. Is it correct to assume that the account I setup (using my name as the login name) is the administrator account?

I know that logged on as the account I created, I can install programs at will (ofcourse the UAC window always pops up) without any issues.

Please clarify this for me. Thanks!

Re: I need to automatically launch a command window on reboot with admin priveleges..

You should be, but If you're in doubt, do this to be 100% sure you are.
Open a command prompt click "Run as administrator", now type the following command:
net user administrator /active:yes
Change users, you should see an Administrator account (called Administrator.)

now, you'd like to get that UAC window gone?
Here's how
Open Control Panel.
Under User Account and Family settings click on the "Add or remove user account". Click on one of the user accounts, for example you can use the Guest ,
Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page" link.
Under "Make changes to your user account" click on the "Change security settings" link.
In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" click to unselect the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.
You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so when ready.

Re: I need to automatically launch a command window on reboot with admin priveleges..

That's the hard way to do this.
Go to start
/all programs/startup. Right click then left click on open.
In a new window go to where you have fah.exe (Usually c/program files Folding @ home ) and drag it to the startup folder.
It should launch when you start windows.

We have a very active F@H team on this forum and if you have any problems just post in the Distributed computing section.

That won't work kodi - simply because the program needs to be run with an argument "-smp" to run in high performance mode. How can you add that argument by simply dragging the .exe to the startup folder?

Re: [SOLVED] I need to automatically launch a command window on reboot with admin pri

Create a shortcut to fah.exe and edit the shortcut's properties to include the -smp switch in the Target box, then drag the shortcut into the Startup folder.
