Which client?

I've just built myself a new machine and would appreciate advice on the best client to use. I'm running an Intel E8400 on a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P mobo with an ATI FireGL V3600 graphics card. I have 4 GB Corsair DDR2.
Thanks.

Re: Which client?

SMP client for multi-core CPUs ( link - 2nd one from the bottom). Read the instructions carefully, it's slightly different to the standard clients and needs the DeinoMPI service to be installed first.

Re: Which client?

I ignored all the instructions and simply downloaded and installed the client. It's running fine and very quick.

Re: Which client?

RTFM is for when things go wrong.

EDIT: My CPU usage is 50%. Can I assume from this that only one core is being used?

Re: Which client?

Sounds likely John. PC Wizard says my cores are being used at 70% and 14% so I've probably got some room for improvement.

Re: Which client?

John, click the Performance tab in Task Manager, then select View > CPU History and change it to 'One graph per CPU' to get a better idea of CPU usage.

And under the Processes tab, right-click the FahCore exe and click 'Set Afinity'. How many of the cores listed are in use?

Re: Which client?

Neither core seems to be running very high. Set to Affinity showed both cores available. In FAH, CPU usage is set to 100%. Despite that it's ripping through 500 frame WUs.

Re: Which client?

I've had problems with the 6.22 beta so I've gone back to 6.20.
I can't believe the speed of this processor. Since I installed it I've gone from 11434 points to 17873.

Re: Which client?

I had to uninstall the 6.22 and re-install after it locked me out. I was within about 10% of completion as well. Noticed that the points for the WUs I'm receiving are 1920 although it's 23 minutes for 1%. However the time allowed is now 6 days for these ones.

Re: Which client?

I'm getting through a 10,000 WU in about 8 hours. I've found out that to run both my cores at 100% I have to have two clients running so I've now got the console 6.20 client running as you can't have two GUI clients running at the same time.

Re: Which client?

The GPU one, definitely. It's much faster than the standard or multi-core clients and doesn't use anywhere near as much CPU/system resources (approx 10% of one CPU core).

I find it doesn't interfere with general desktop apps, but when you go into 3D mode for games or play a video you might want to turn it off temporarily.

As far as I know, the GPU client will only use one of your 8800s. If you can monitor your graphics cards while running it, can you please post back to say if both are being used? Thanks.

Re: Which client?

well still working out how to monitor my GPUs is everest what I need? ) but noticed a MASSIVE improvement in speed. getting around 2000-3500 iterations/second (or on a 25000 unit job, 0.01% per second)

edit: well nvidia system monitor does not show GPU usage. any ideas?

Re: Which client?

You can use nTune in the nvidia control panel, Everest, RivaTuner, etc. Any program that displays GPU temperatures and clock speeds will show you if both cards are being used.

Since changing my system I no longer get failed WUs and have now shot from 11,000 points to 50,000+ points which takes me into 10th place.
