E8400 Wolfdale Folding Performance - Page 2

Just a short update for hijackers and non-hijackers alike.

Installed new heatsink (Zalman 9500AM2) and drop my Vcore to 1.30v. Temps are now down to a cool 44°c while folding and wouldn't break 53° during Orthos running in place small FFTs (max heat generation). Should drop a couple more degrees once the AS5 cures a little.

Again temp taken with Core Temp. Sensorview and Gigabytes software shows the temp at around 40°

I really hate to hear that Brian. One of the biggest factors in my choice of Gigabyte over Asus was the fact that the support at Asus has really went down hill over the past couple of years, and the RMA process is terrible. It looks Gigabyte may be infected with same bug.

That's better Glas but that shakes out to about 36hrs per WU, slightly better than my old FX60, but not as good as the 5600+.

Does your case have good airflow?

Did you use Acrtic Silver or another silver compound on your heatsink? It really does make a hugh difference. I must have been out of AS5 when I put the Zalman 9500 on my FX60 and used the Zalman compound apparently as a not so temporary solution. (as I discovered when I took it out to take pics for Ebay)

It was sitting at 57° while folding, and would hit 60° during Orthos. I used the good AS5 when I reinstalled the CPU and the temp instantly dropped by 10°.

It has been so long since a started using Arctic Silver exclusively that I forgot just how much better it is than your average thermal compound.

What is your CPU usage percentage up to now?

. I never heard back from Turbines about his before and after temps so if anyone does contemplate trying out the lapping method would they please make a note of their before and after temps. Thanks.

According to Task Manager, cpu usage is around 87%. I have the Antec 900 case - no shortage of fans there. And yes, I use AS5 on my Zalman HSF.

PC Wizard reports my core voltage as 1.238v - that seems to be OK (although I'm no hardware expert).

I'm prepared to leave it at that for a while, just to ensure stability etc. I'll review and make any adjustments after that.

I did a little searching on lapping results and what I found showed the results for a Q6600. Only about 2° per core when lapping just the HS, better results when lapping both.

Yeah, plenty of air flow there Glas. Like a wind tunnel.

I would think your load temp would be little better than that, since you're not at 100% CPU usage and running at stock speed. Are you using the fan control that came with the Zalman or plugged straight into the MB header? I would let it spin at full speed.

From what he says in that link it looks like it's worth doing. Plus he didn't do it as thoroughly as Turbines did.

I read in another thread that anything more than 800-1000 grit paper produces very little gain and is more for show.

From the link I posted it would seem that biggest gain comes from lapping both the CPU and HS. I'm not willing to do it to my 8400 but I'll eventually do it to the S939 4400+ though and let you know the results. (when my shoulder is health enough)

John, because this will be an article in its own right, perhaps we should start a new thread - I will need assistance from you and probably Matt

I know nowt about clocking and internal measurements and before I do the lapping, i will need to be able to definitive measurements before & after

Should we do the preliminary research and draft work as PMs or Emails or what (I don't mind giving my email addy in a PM if anyone wants to give input)

I don't use the fan control that came with the Zalman - it's plugged into the mobo and it's speed varies depending on the core temps. I think it's max speed is around 1400rpm.

Glas, that Zalman will spin at a top speed of about 2600rpm and is pretty quite at top speed. To unleash it go into the BIOS and navigate to PC Health. Toward the bottom of the page you should see something like CPU Smart Fan Control. Disable it then hit F10 to save and exit. The extra 1200rpm should make a noticable difference. Let me know

BTW, I'm sure you know this but I feel it should be stated anyway. Lapping a processor will void the warranty.

Too late mate! I just posted in this section on the grounds of insanity and that (a) i didn't see your guidance & (b) it is loosly connected with folding and that I will post at that place once I have done the biz.

edit: I would also like addition input as to what would yopu like to see documented other than before & after temperatures
