Experiment is the way to go for most amateurs - It’s the way to learn - make mistakes and benefit for them. I have learnt mainly by trial & error (sometimes more error that trial). I subscribe to a magazine 'Digital Photo' which, though concentrating on the photo aspect of graphics it does have some of the best tutorials on their cover discs (usually 10 - 12 tutorials a month) - I have collected these over the years and often refer back to them... Although it is a UK publication, it is available worldwide and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the basic or even advanced techniques of image creation/manipulation in Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, Elements etc See: http://www.dpmag.co.uk (No, I don’t have any connection to DP Mag!)

Re: Folding@Home Banner
www.tutorialized.com is superb for creating supreme effects in photoshop and many many other editors.
Allowing images in banners for 'Registered Users' may be fairly difficult to manage as I doubt there is a way to limit what can be placed in signatures if the links/images permission is lifted. For this, its probably best if a mod creates a signature for the F@H member/team. Donald, I love your thinking in post 15 above, there are some great ideas in there that are well worth thinking about for this project. |

Thanks carsey, I'll play more this weekend. I'm a beginer w/these programs but I'm sure ags131 can help too when he comes this weekend. I really would like to start designing grafics for cars, trucks, and really for anything. Skins for laptops, pc cases, that sort of thing. I just need to learn the design software first so I can impliment some of my ideas.

Re: Folding@Home Banner
Thanks Casey for your #23
Anything we can do to progress the project forward to the desired end & result should and must be done. Another thought came to me - This forum must have a database email addresses. I am usually vehemently averse to mass emailing, however for something like F@H, it could be justified IF done sensitively.

Re: Folding@Home Banner
It's very unlikely that TSF will resort to spamming its members.

Re: Folding@Home Banner
Agreed, but it can always be added beneath the banner as plain text as an option.

Re: Folding@Home Banner
All the banners look great, thank you for your time and effort koala! Can't wait for the vote.
DonaldG you have some great points and ideas I applaud you for them. Guys, this I can tell you,,,,,, from the beginning we struggled with membership and traffic in the distributed computing forum, but we are a young team and still learning, kodi started to promote F@H in his sig and since we have seen membership climb because additional members now promote F@H in there sigs, snowball effect that will only get better with a banner. Its great to see the enthusiasm and team effort and its something we can all be proud of! |

Re: Folding@Home Banner
Personally, I feel that if we have additional teams, we would be splitting our efforts and splitting the scores...
Again, I feel that we must also try and avoid the word "Team" because of its connotations. I think something on the lines of TSF F@H Club/Group/Guild/League/or whatever. The members of our club/team is now 22. We should be able to add many more members with the right sort of campaign within the forum. Thinking caps time! What MORE can we do to increase members? I know that I have the word 'team' in my sig but I am afraid to change the wording because at my lowly status, I don't have the privileges of adding a link (A kind Mod did it for me.)

Re: Folding@Home Banner
First off, nice job on the banners Koala. I like the "Click for details" feature.
Now on to the debate over the use of the word team. There is no way to avoid use of the word because that is what F@H uses. We are Team TSF. No way around it. We can call it a what ever we want, but at the end of the day it's still Team TSF, when you check the stats it's Team Stats. I believe the best way to avoid any confusion would be not using the word Team in the banner or signature, and add a statement in the sticky addressing the fact that the Distributed Computing team is open to all TSF staff and registered users (and non registered users for that matter). Just my two cents. |
