Linux & F@H faster than Windows.

I put together an A64 3200+ with 512mb of XMS PC3200, MX4000 video card, running Linux Mint on an old 2.5gb HD. This thing is burning through a WU in less than 24 hrs. (I think the WUs are around 1000 frames. It only shows 292.50pts in the console) I got it running on the 27th and I'm already on my 4th WU. (All have been 292.50pts). In comparison, my FX60 running XP on 2gb of RAM, 7800gt, takes about 62 hrs to run a 1500 frame WU.

I think the WU are scored differently and have different complexities. The first WU I completed was 250 frames, but netted me 500 pts.

Re: Linux & F@H faster than Windows.

Extract from FAQ

How do you set the deadlines for the work units?

Each work unit is benchmarked on a dedicated 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 machine with SSE2 disabled. For most work units (although there may be exceptions, described in the next paragraph), we apply this equation

timeout = 20 * (daysPerWU) + 2 deadline = max(30* (daysPerWU) + 2,10)

where daysPerWU is the number of days it took to complete the unit. The "+2" days is there to give an additional buffer for fast WUs (to allow for servers down, etc). If 30*daysPerWU is less than 10 days, we set the deadline to 10 days, as a minimum time for all projects. The timeout is the time at which the WU is resent to another client and the deadline is the last time which we will give stats credit for the WU.

Occasionally, deadlines may be set shorter or longer than the above calculation indicates, but the reason for having deadlines at all is that the sooner we get back work units, the sooner we can put the results to good use. Also, different projects have different requirements server-side and may require shorter or allow longer deadlines (e.g. "pfold" calculations can often be run without any deadlines, whereas MREMD calculations work best with very tight deadlines). The assignment server does take machine performance into account in making assignments, thereby allowing slower machines to receive more appropriate work units.

Matt, you are running nearly the same system as me (mine has 1gig ram) and you are finishing WU's a lot quicker on Linux, you will soon overtake me the way you are going.
I am still waiting to get my Quad core online and then i will able to really push out the WU's

It seems the points are actually predetermined. http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html the frames are way off but the points are pretty much right on. As I said, the Linux console only shows the point value of the project I'm folding, not the frames as the Graphical Client for Windows does, and they are they same as report in the project summary.

@ Brian

My Linux box is running as a dedicated F@H machine, 24/7 with all resources available to F@H.

My FX60 is also running 24/7 but I've only allocated about 80% of 1 core to F@H, which should put it close to the same level as the 3200+ at 100%.

Both rigs have actually ran the exact same WU (3040) and the Linux box finished about 45 mins sooner.

Pharoah,
That's the kind of WUs my Windows machine is getting as well. I'm now on my 3rd 1500 frame WU and just finished a 5k WU.

Re: Linux & F@H faster than Windows.

This just clinches it: Linux>Windows. Where's my Ubuntu install disc for the hundredth time!

I'm going to have my Linux quad-core soon, then I'll be tearing through the WUs. I think I'll have her set up as a DWUS for four weeks or so, just to break her in a bit.

Re: Linux & F@H faster than Windows.

Yeah. Linux is good if you don't have many games and constantly need to un-crash your machine due to programming errors or malwares.

When's my new quad-core going to be ready? I'm tired of waiting!

I wonder if the 64-bit linux version is significantly faster than the 32-bit windows....

I will have to do some testing.
