alogarithem for finding in a list

Hi
this is my first thread so i hope you will all understand me.
I program in labview but this is only the platform for my algorithm.
What I need is to get a list of wave lengths (WL) from a wave length meter and then find for each WL how far is it from the official DWDM WL used for telecommunication.
The algorithm I am using now looks for the first match of the WL and the first item of the list and then matches the next WL with the second item of the list and so on.
The problem is that sometimes my laser source is to noisy and some of the WL in the middle are missing and then all the WL afterwards are all shifted by 1 place.
Another problem is that sometimes my first WL is bigger than the first item of the list and then it is not found at all.
Any ideas for a more efficient algorithm?
(I attached my VI for those who accidentaly have labview)
thanks
amose
