Learning Ruby

Hi

If anyone has heard of RPG Maker XP they will know that it runs on Ruby.

Now, I want to learn how to code in Ruby but I have not been able to find a good, easy tutorial to learn how to use Ruby, either on the internet on in the local library or even in the school library.

So if anyone can let me know a good place to go to so I can find reliable training tips and information, I would be grateful,

Re: Learning Ruby

There's a book called Learning Ruby that's supposed to be extremely simple. There previously were Hackety Hack and "Why's (poignant) Guide to Ruby" but these may be difficult to find as a large amount of whytheluckystiff's (the author of both) online presence has disappeared. Programming Ruby is one of the best known books about the language, but I'm not sure how well it would work as a tutorial for someone new to programming.

I can't really say anything about RPG Maker, since I avoid Windows-only software. You might want to note which version of Ruby it uses, since that information would probably help in debugging any issues you have in the future.

Re: Learning Ruby

It uses Ruby 1.8.1.

Do you know of any online tutorials?

Re: Learning Ruby

Ha, so I actually do know Ruby - since I can program in RPG Maker. I thought it was it's own scripting language.

Re: Learning Ruby

Well, the stuff whytheluckystiff did were the main ones I remembered, but you can look through http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/documentation/ to find tutorials and documentation.

http://pine.fm/LearnToProgram/ - The tutorial that seems to have led to the book Learning Ruby. Same author, but older and might have less material than the book. Probably worth looking at.

You may find some strange quirks since RPG Maker uses such an old version of Ruby. For learning, you'll probably want to download 1.8.6 or 1.8.7 (although I normally try to stick with 1.9).
