Lost installation disc. Recreate from H/D?

Hi
I recently bought a video editing program, installed it on my pc, and quickly lost the installation discs !!! I've a feeling they went out with the trash.

Is it possible to make a new installation disk of sorts from the files on my computer?

thanx
Tony

No it's not possible to re-create the installation disk, it's possible to just copy all the files and registry values to the disk then copy them back etc...

What's the program called? maybe theres an installer somewhere online?

cheers,
Jamey

if you lost the disks, the only thing you can do is to contact the company. Most will replace lost or broken disks.

I'll try writing to the company.
THe program is called Magix Movie Edit Pro 14+, an exceptionally powerful and under-rated video editing producing package imo.

Jamey, what you propose is really what I was hoping for.
THere are a lot of keys and values that come up in a search that include the word MAGIX.
If I save each of these as a .reg file, should I have that aspect covered?

Thanx Tony

theres really no way to copy all of the registry entries, the hidden files that were installed, the other ms files that were changed, and any file that may have been installed in other folders including windows.

As I said before but in less detail, if you really had a legal registered copy of that program, then the company should replace it at a reduce cost. If the company has a trial uncrippled version, then maybe you can download it and it would work with your key or whatever method they use to verify legal ownership.

Re: Lost installation disc. Recreate from H/D?

Hey, I googled magix, they have an installer for the trial version of their software here: http://www.magix.com/uk/free-downloa...rial-versions/ (3rd item down)... I assume you can then register with your origional details after having installed the trial. (i'm not sure about the ...14+ because the + thing may be implemented in another way)

Cheers,
Jamey

Re: Lost installation disc. Recreate from H/D?

if you really had a legal registered copy of that program

I would've said the same ;-)
I did try to copy it when I first got it. I have two of the earlier versions too, and they're the best copy-protected software I've ever come across. Ring protection means it takes about 10 hours to copy the dvd with Alcohol 120 - So if I consider my time that cheap, I could get that far, but even then the copy doesn't work -Perhaps it looks at the creation date on the copy. And with the new version, you have to register some six times with the company to get all the features working (AC3 sound etc) - some free some nominal charge. - And that's really a pain in the rear - lots of passwords and codes to keep track of and not get mixed up.
I kinda think with that level of security they won't give me a cheaper replacement. I'll asak, but at the end of the day I'll probably buy a replacement slightly cheaper from EBay.

Anyway, this morning I totally screwed my system. It came from dell with Vista pre-installed, and I added XP as a dual boot which is much better imo. I was exploring my new copy of Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2008, which I've never used, browsing the menus. Eventually, I browsed 'repair MBR' ... and &^*% me!!! no warning... no intermediate menu like every other item I'd looked at... It just did it in an instant. It changed my MBR!! When I rebooted it displayed a Paragon splash screen "Booting to XP in 15 seconds", but it hung. Maybe it was confused with Vista being the lead boot. I couldn't get past this screen with any of my inadequate rescue disks,or any of the installed boot options.
After 5 attempts at Vista repair, the sixth one worked (Why the sixth, no Idea, but at least I'm back). But Jeez what a waste of a morning. Magix 14+ is on XP, and still accessible. I should be able to get it back eventually, but I'll buy that tetrabyte usb drive and clone my whole system first. Should've done it ages ago. Relatively new pc - no backup!

Think I'll bin Vista. XP does everything I need.

Back everything up now!

Cheers and thanks for advice & support.

Tony

PS there is one advantage of a dual boot which I came across recently. XP had a virus which stopped the Antivirus software working properly - couldn't clear it. But by running antivirus software from Vista, which was not sick, the whole pc was cleaned up and XP was cured.
