what is needed to be able to perform a repair or upgrade on a system that is under warranty without voiding the warranty?

Simple upgrades like additional HD, added RAM should be OK. To be on the safe side, write the manufacture and ask them.

If it is an Alienware machine, don't touch it or they will not honor the warranty.
