ZoneAlarm Phones Home

Just after installing my Asus RMA'd MoBo and hooking up my XP pro HD, which went smoothly, I noticed via my router (ISDN) that my computer was constantly connecting to the internet. My ISP's monthly timeonline is set at 325 hrs to contact me. I received an email which indicated I'd used 345 hrs. I was shocked, since I'd never used that many hours before. After spending several days searching for a bug, turning off and on services and startup programs, I finally found the problem......ZoneAlarm! I have the router idle timeout set at 20 seconds and the timeonline log showed hour after hour online. I've used ZA (free) for years and have been very happy. I uninstalled and reinstalled ZA with no change. Six months ago I made a clone of my HD so I tried it......and it had the same problem. Now with ZA uninstalled on both drives, the problem is gone. Now I'm using XP's firewall until I decide on...... I guess a different firewall. Has anyone else had or heard of this problem with ZA before? Thanks!

The company says it will fix the "bug" soon. In the meantime you can work around it by adding:
# Block access to ZoneLabs Server 127.0.0.1 zonelabs.com to your Windows host file.

Thanks for the info koala. After reading the two news articles, I find it hard to believe that it's just a bug in ZA. You know how it goes when you find out someone has lied or stolen from you....it's very difficult to trust them again.
