Serious paranoia..

For a while now I have been extremly paranoid about someone I know running a remote server ( and keylogger) on my computer. I have gone to great lengths to make myself feel secure (XP SP2, ZA, SW doctor, Symnatec AV all fully updated) and I am still very paranoid. This person told me a while ago he simply coded a remote server that attaches itself to an image. So he sends the image over IM, you open it and the code executes. He claimed this code setup a remote server between his and his victims computer. It worked by pinging him every 24 hours and then opening ports or something down those lines. He said it made itself a completly undectable windows process and that no firewall would pick it up.

Now this guy isn't a freak or anything he just has a year or two experiance of coding. Incase you're thinking being able to do such a thing is doubtfull, he told me to check CMD and what do you know there was a connection to his IP.

My question is, is an intermediate coder really capable of such a programme? If so how do I detect it? I always scan with AVs, trojan hunters etc but it's always in the back of my head it's still on there.

Please someone either reassure me or tell me how I can be sure there is no remote server/key logger on my computer. It's just not being sure either way that is the worst part, any help is greatly appreciated.
