Help!My Inspiron1501 is producing standard windows sounds randomly(on standby,sleep)

Hello,

Please can someone help!

I have a Inspiron 1501 (with XP as I removed vista) and I think it has a virus. I have scanned the computer many times but it has not located the virus.

About 2 weeks ago my laptop started to produce standard windows sounds (for example the sounds - start windows session, exit windows, etc) at random times. It started making the sounds when the computer was on standby or sleep mode at fairly frequent intervals (perhaps every 20 minutes). So I turned the offending sounds off individually and permanently by using the control panel. Gradually the machine is producing more and more different sounds and i am having to turn them all of permanently. Now for the first time it has started to make sounds randomly when the computer is in use (not on stand-by or sleep).

HELP! I wonder if anyone can advise me how to stop this. I am not fantastically computer literate (as you may have guessed) so would appreciate simple steps.

Many thanks!!!!
Sianie

PS - I have installed the programme MadTwitter which seems to have problems at similar times to the sound. Could this be related?

Hi Sianie, welcome to TSF

Does MadTwitter use sounds to notify you of incoming tweets or errors? Check its options to see if they can be disabled.

Try uninstalling MadTwitter to see if this gets rid of the random sounds.

If you want to use an alternative program, try Ada or DestroyTwitter.

If you still have the problem with random sounds after uninstalling MadTwitter, please follow these instructions and start a new thread in the Virus/Trojans/Spyware forum where an analyst will help you as soon as possible.
