I recently installed Search & Destroy on my PC. My question is, when does it scan?

You can configure Spybot S&D to run a scan at system startup under Settings -> Automation -> System start, "Automatically run program at system startup". You can also configure the level of automated scanning and fixing by checking off the various checkboxes under the setting.
