Need to purchase new Antivirus

Hello, I first need to tell you I am not computer smart at all.

I have just purchased a DELL 530 with XP. It arrived with 30 days of virus protection MicroTrend Internet Security 14. I am hearing bad reviews about the software. Now my question.

Is it a good antivirus? If not what should I purchase and NOT "break my bank". DELL said Norton's 360 was the only thing that was compatible??? (also horrible reviews)(Could this be true?).... They sent me an uninstall patch to remove Microtrend when I was ready. I have one week to decide to leave this installed or uninstall it and decide what I should do. What are your thoughts

Thank you

Re: Need to purchase new Antivirus

theres bad reviews on every single antivirus software out there and theres good reviews on every single antivirus software out there.

If you have wireless, IMO, dont us Nortons 360 - go with nortons internet security. I personally like Trend Micros Internet Security and used it. I used both of them.

Its really a personal choice. There are others out there also free and commercial. AVG and Avast are both free and good - Just dont have all the fancy features the commercial versions have and have smaller footprints.

Just about every version have a free trial. Give each a try and see with ones you like the best .

Re: Need to purchase new Antivirus

You think I would be ok to stay with the Microtrend PC-Cillin 14. The price seemed steep to me 79.00 a year.
Is this in the ball park?

If I go with the Norton's I need to uninstall the Microtrend, being a non technical computer looser is there going to be any issues.

My daughter uses the Agast and she says it works well. I know it is personal choice, I just need to which one needs the least amount of "know how" and least amount of trouble is I change over.

Now I have to decide to go with Norton's or Agast hmmmmmm or stay here with Microtrend OH BTW 79.00 a year is that the average price

Thanks

Re: Need to purchase new Antivirus

I use and reccomend AVG . . free or paid ( the difference is mostly in automatic scanning options ) . . Version 8.0 is the newest, and it seems to be a bit more resource hungry than the older 7.5, but still nothing like Norton . . Norton can bring most systems to their knees. The paid version is $35 per year or $55 for two years

Re: Need to purchase new Antivirus

The $79/year software is no easier to use and no better than the free software, so if I was you I would install Comodo (free firewall), Avast (free antivirus), Ad-Aware 2007 (free antispyware) and SpyBot (more free antispyware).

Keep them up to date and run once a week and you'll be safe and $79 better off.

Re: Need to purchase new Antivirus

Thank you Thank you everyone! I am still open for suggestions, but the free antivirus sounds better and better to me! BTW Dell sent me the patch to uninstall Micro-trend Pc-Cillin, so that should not be a problem
