I installed windows xp just 2 months ago and it was working properly.But now the windows runs very slwly and many times it hangs by itself.Please tell what the problem can be and how to correct it.

[also, it may be an idea to run a virus scan]

Run antivirus scans on the system. You may also want to run msconfig to disable startups. Start, Run, msconfig, click on the startups tab. Disable all at the bottom, apply and close. Then reboot your pc. You may also want to check for winsock issues. To do this: Start, run, msinfo32, +components, +network, click protocol. Another screen opens on the other side, the first item should say name. Out beside that should be MSAFD TCP/IP {TCP/IP}. If you have anything else there, that is the problem and you'll need to clear the winsock registry.
