i have avast on my computer

i have avast antivirus on my computer,free edition 4home.and it doesnt let me now when a virus is in ,i have to do a scan on my computer to see if is infected.it is normal?if not what do i have to do?

I used to use avast, but gave it up for avg (uses less resources). This is normal behavior. If it sees a virus it will notify you. If one gets by it will catch it on a scan if the defintions are up to date. As long as you have it set to automatic update or you update it manually on a regular basis, and have it set to scan periodically, there is nothing else you need to do.

The free Avast! can be configured to scan with a screen saver, which might help you out.
