My personal choice is;
AdAware
Spybot
Microsoft Windows Defender
all available free for home use.

With a firewall and Antivirus program also.

My System

Pest Patrol offers a pretty good real time protection - I use version 4.4 (I think) as I like the GUI but i'm not sure this is available to download anymore but it uses the same definitions / lists as the latest versions/builds so i'm sticking with it.

Also, SpySweeper is pretty good too.

I agree Spysweeper is good. [though it's not free I don't think]

I have Spywareblaster installed which I find excellent too.

Spysweeper is seamless; however it is a resource hog. I like trend micro I never even notice it working in the background.

Trend Micro Pc-cillin Products have major problems:
1) The AntiSpyware is terrible
2) The Firewall keeps ports opened, and is easily disabled by hackers
3) The only good thing is the AV and AntiSpam

Out of those choices, CounterSpy and Spy Sweeper are the best. Both have good detection rates, stable builds and generally good reviews. Spy Sweeper is slightly more powerful, but is heavier on resources, whereas CounterSpy is more efficient, but not really any better.
