Recommendations for wireless router
I come to you in my time of need. My wireless router is crapping out after years of faithful and diligent service. I currently have a D-Link 524 wireless 802.11g router. For wired use it's a beast, ahndling my network data like a champ. With wireless it doesn't fare as well. It goes quick when it connects, but has trouble staying connected. When it drops it'll sometimes pick right back up. Other times I am forced to reboot the router.
I have 2 desktop machines connected with wires and a laptop with a built-in 802.11b/g wireless system. I've used lots of D-Link in the past and would like to stay with them as they are incredibly easy to configure. I have a home web server that also is used for storage and printing. I send tons of data from machine to machines, ranging from a few KB here and there to multiple GB at times.

I don't have a specific model recommendation, but I think I'd just do a search on various models in the D-Link line and see what positive or negative comments show up.
That's how I generally search on a new item if I don't have any first-hand info.

I have all Dlink here. I just added wireless a couple of months ago and went with a DI-524. Has been running excellent. Haven't had to power cycle it at all. Have had to do that a couple of times on my DI-704p until they came out with a firmware upgrade.

For a SOHO wireless router, I really have nothing bad to say about the Linksys line if you ever decided to move away from D-Link.

I have used a lot of Linksys without issues. I have used others as well.
I just prefer units with removable antenna and the early Linksys and some other routers can use 3rd party firmware that allow you to used then as bridges and clients as well as change the power levels. One thing I have found interesting on Netgear routers is most of them have a static route or proxy to access cable modem stats web interface 192.168.100.1 without pulling the router out of line. This is a very interesting feature that does not seem to be well known. JamesO |

I actually use a single port wired router, gig switch, and a Netgear AP with PoE. It makes it nice when installing the AP in remote locations, away from a power source.
