slower after portforwarding

Hey everyone, I don't have much experience with routers but after being dissatisfied with my download speeds using bittorrent, I decided to forward ports after hearing this improved things. I forwarded the port that BitComet is using by creating a NAT rule entry, this helped improve speeds slightly using a private tracker, and I am now listed on the site as having that port forwarded. Unfortunately, this has slowed down all downloading from public tracker sites. I have a reasonably slow broadband connection but should be able to download at around 30 kb/s. Before portforwarding, a certain torrent was downloading at an average of about 12 kb/s, after portforwarding, it is averaging around 3 kb/s, with approximately 40 seeds connected. I tried deleting the NAT rule entry, but speeds did not go back to what they were before. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here? Also, when downloading more than one torrent at once, speeds reduce greatly as if there is some sort of conflict. This was happening before I tampered with portforwarding though, just wondering why this is.

When using BitTorrent, you're expected to upload as much as (if not more) than you download. When you properly forward the required ports, users will be able to connect to your computer and download files off of you which will earn you a better share rating allowing you to download at faster speeds. The problem with this is that most users have asynchronous broadband connections with small uplink speeds so you can very easily saturate your uplink with uploads making it hard to obtain good download speeds, so even though you're allowed to download faster, you no longer have the capability to do so. This also comes heavily into play when you're downloading multiple files at the same time — you don't have the upload speed required, so you end up killing both your uplink and your share rating. Some clients (such as Azureues) have a number of options or plugins that you can use to cap your upload speed.

Thanks for the reply. I do not think this is the problem, however. It is uploading at around 6 kb/s which i don't think would be enough to slow the downloading. Also, limiting upload speed does not help either.

Actually, yeah the upload limiting is helping now, thanks a lot.
