Trouble with D-Link DI-704 Router...
Hi,
I have 2 computers in my house and have been able to connect to the internet (cable) separately with few problems - occasionally I have to unplug and replug the modem when switching from one to the other; but this is not the problem. I have just bought a D-Link DI-704 Router but I'm having trouble getting the connection to work on both PCs (both running Win XP Pro) simultaneously. The connection via the router is fine if only 1 computer is plugged into it but only 1 will work when both are attached. I've configured the router by connecting to http//192.168.0.1 etc, as stated in the manual, but it hasn't changed anything. I've no experience with routers and wasn't expecting it to be hard work! Any help would be appreciated. |

The symptoms seem to suggest that you have the broadband modem plugged into a LAN port, and not the WAN port. Check the cables, and I think you'll have better luck.

I'm a bit confused. The only port of that size is the standard ethernet port on the motherboard. I also have an ethernet PCI card on the other computer as well as the standard motherboard port. I've tried running the modem into the ethernet PCI card and connecting the 2 PCs using the the motherboard ports but I get the same problem.
Do I have to set up a fully working network between the 2 PCs before I can share the internet? |

Plug the cable from the modem into the WAN port of the router. The LAN ports are connect to the local computers. It's the connection from the modem to the router that's incorrectly connected.

The WAN port is usually offset from the regular ports. When you plug it in, check the WAN light on the front.

Hmmm, well I think it may have had something to do with a virus that was limiting our internet usage on one PC. Some time after I got rid of that, I thought I'd try plugging both computers into the router again, and now it works fine!!! I knew I had it setup properly! Thanks for your help guys.
