forwading packets to pcs without router!

we all know that it is not easy to buy a router so that you can establish a real network. It is easy to use the simulating softwares to build a network. Therefore I am wondering if any one knows a way by which we can use pc as a real test pad meaning can we make the pc or the notebook work as a router... if any one knows any usefull links about this topic or any information relating to this please kindly forward it to muhudin99@yahoo.com or sebriye99@hotmail.com.
