Question Hi Everyone: Routing over Windows XP problem

Hi everyone ,i am relatively new to networking but have a good idea how things work and am also new to forums so please be gentle,

Here's my network setup:

First of all i have a wireless router connected to the internet which is all working correctly and called "rt". The internal IP of this router is 192.168.1.254 as expected.

Secondly i have a windows XP Pro SP2 box called "bridge" with a USB belkin wireless card inserted and a PCI ethernet card. The XP box has enabled routing and firewall disabled (for now).

The wireless IP is 192.168.1.253 and is gateway is 192.168.1.254 and 192.168.2.254. The ethernet card is 192.168.2.253 and gateway is 192.168.1.253 and 192.168.2.254.

"brigde's" ethernet card id is hardwired to another box running linux called "fw" which acts as a firewall and has 4 nics eth0,eth1,eth2,eth3. "bridge" is connected to eth0 which has an IP of 192.168.2.254. "fw" has forwarding enabled.

I have another XP box called "steve" which has an IP of 192.168.5.200 and gateway is set to 192.168.5.254 and is connected to eth3 on "fw" which has an IP of 192.168.5.254.

I have other computers and switches hanging of the firewall on eth1 and eth2 but they are not relevant to this problem.

Basically i can ping all my machines but cannot ping "rt" from "steve". I can ping "rt" from "bridge". I think the problem relates to the gateway settings some how on "bridge" but am not sure.

Can anyone help cause i have been struggling with this all day and am here as a last resort. Thanks. Steve.

I have included a map of my network topology to help

Re: Hi Everyone: Routing over Windows XP problem

You're missing a static route statement somewhere. Your diagram image was set at too low of a resolution for me to make out what is where. Since everything except the Linux box is probably running a dynamic routing protocol like Rip, and since Linux does not like dynamic routing protocols, I would look there.

Re: Hi Everyone: Routing over Windows XP problem

Is there a way to load RIP (dynamic protocol) on XP professional?

Re: Hi Everyone: Routing over Windows XP problem

Unless you are using XPP for serving remote access, there is no benefit. You can enable a RIP listener in your Network Properties.
