Roll Eyes SMTP and GmailSync?

Hi everyone, I'm fairly uninitiated to server tech and protocols...but here we go...
I work in a research lab and need to back up some data from several satellite sites. The biggest problem is physically getting to these places, so I was looking for a way to access the data remotely (FTP maybe..but that's for another thread), or to have it automatically emailed to a master email account.
I stumbled across the GmailSync tool, which apparently uses SMTP with Stunnel (http://weblogs.asp.net/nleghari/pages/gmailbackup.aspx) to email me data. Coupled with Windows Task Manager, I could do it automatically (or so the site says).
My question is whether the SMTP nature of the program requires me to have a pre-existing network/server to which all my computers are connected?
The computers are running windows Xp, but I'm not sure if it's Home or Pro. Or will the GmailSync program simply send data to a designated email account, where I can access it from any computer?

Thank you everyone!

Re: SMTP and GmailSync?

Looks like just a Gmail username and password would be needed.

Re: SMTP and GmailSync?

You'd have a maximum file size of 25 MB, and a maximum total space of 7358 MB.

An online storage and sharing solution is another option if you have larger files.

I haven't used any, but the OribitFiles site looks very interesting. $5 per month for unlimited storage, 1 GB max file size, and 200 GB /month bandwidth
