d-link des-1105 router issues

edit: i found the problem. it's not a damn router. the person who bought it just didn't actually pay any attention to what it was

The D-Link DES-1105 is a plain Ethernet switch, not a router. You need an actual broadband router.

it turns out my dad went to fry's and thought he found a $10 router to replace our broken one and that today was the first time anyone actually looked at the box

i had to fight with him to convince him he bought the wrong hardware too. for a little while after i told him it was a switch he was absolutely certain they were the exact same thing

there was even a damned diagram on the back that showed a router plugging into it and a colorful picture making it explicit that you're supposed to already have a router...
