[SOLVED] Cannot connect to internet

Hi, I have a compaq 6720s laptop, running Vista Business+SP1. 1gig RAM and 160gb hdd.

The other day my wireless connection suddenly went dead. I discovered that the DHCP client service was not running, and after reading several forums and countless number of threads, I managed to get it up and running again, but unfortunately I still cannot connect, can only get my LAN. Even when I try to use a static address, still no luck! When I use ipconfig I get the following:

Wireless LAN Adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : iconnect.zm
Link-local IPv6 Address........... . :fe80::dcd9:e6ad:619d:6474%12
Autoconfigeration IPv4 Address . :169.254.100.116
Subnet Mask......................... . :255.255.0.0
Default Gateway.................... . :

Then there's a whole bunch of similar entries below for "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:", "Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network Connection:" and "Tunnel Adapter Local Area Connection*6:" (right through to 24). And they all read
Media State........................................ : Media disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix............... :

Can anybody help. If you need anymore info, please don't hesitate.

Thanks

Chris

Re: Cannot connect to internet

It seems like you're not connecting to your router, that's why you're getting a 169.254.100.16 ip address. Are you sure you're connecting to your router? Perhaps you should restart your router and then try to view wireless connections and then reconnect to yours.

Re: Cannot connect to internet

I cannot understand how you have 24 Local Area Connections, this tells me that either you have 24 lan's u connect to or there is a problem..or am i misunderstanding.
Give us a bit of a breakdown.
Which is for the ethernet connection concerned?
When u mention wireless connection, do are referring to the WiFi to connect to the internet?
What do you mean by "can only get my LAN" - can you see other PC's?
How many PC's connect?
Etc, etc...give as much info as possible...

Re: Cannot connect to internet

I would Power Cycle your setup for starters
Power off ALL systems (Modem/Router/Computers) Unplug them.
Power up the Modem and wait for the lights to become solid
Power up the Router and wait a few minutes
Power up each computer, allow it to find an IP address
See if you are able to connect.

Re: Cannot connect to internet

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Cannot connect to internet

Hi, thanks for all the feed back. I have actually managed to sort out my problem.

The Norton Firewall was still active even though I had uninstalled Nortons (Or so I thought). After several forum "reads" I downloaded the Norton removal tool, ran and bingo "Bobs your uncle!" everything started working like a charm!!!!

Thanks so much for all your help guys, I really appreciate it!
