Google only connection

I have a new cable modem from Comcast.
Since the modem has been connected I have not been able to connect to any websites except Google on my vista laptop via wireless connection. I believe this must be an IP6 versus an IP4 problem but I've not been able to figure it out.
I have manually set the DNS in the IP4 protocol on the laptop. I have added a bypass for the laptop to the DMZ. No change. NOTE: The desktop computer I have which runs a Windows XP and a wireless connection works fine. Also, a third computer which runs Linux distro Fedora 7 works as advertised in the glossy manuals, but that is hard-wired to the hub.
The network works fine. I can ping the laptop from the desktop.
Laptop is a compaq running Vista (ugh) Home Premium with Service Pack 1

Re: Google only connection

This has nothing to do with the Comcast modem, especially since other folks are connecting fine using the same modem.

Try booting this machine in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you have the same issue.

Re: Google only connection

I tried booting into safe mode with networking but I still get the same results. Anything the is trying to get IPv4 is unable to connect. I tried disabling IPv6 but that didn't work either.
It's very odd that this started happening after the comcast modem was replaced since the laptop was working fine before the modem.

Re: Google only connection

The fact that two of three computers connected to your router work properly, would seem to eliminate the Comcast modem, I simply can't imagine how this is the issue. I really think you are looking in the wrong place, it's your laptop that has the problem.

Re: Google only connection

Oh, I'm not suggesting that there is something wrong with the comcast modem. I think it is a Vista compatibility problem with the wireless router, probably. The old wireless router worked fine on this laptop. I'm quite stumped. I just can't get the IPv4 protocol layer to operate, at least that's my take on it.
I've tried disabling the IPv6 layer but Vista must have a back-door layer running because when I disable it from the Network Control Center the Google pages still load but no other site will. Actually I have found other sites that load and I suspect that they are using IPv6 also. The thing is I'm just not sure what is going on.

Re: Google only connection

Hi,

what results do you get if you 'ping google.com'

can you access 'http://www.whatismyip.com'

have you looked at the config page on your router to see what external IP it has been assigned.

Is it possible the google page is loading because it is cached, what happens if you try and search for 'autralian chainsaws' or something similarly obscure.

It may just be that your new modem isnt being assigned an IP by your ISP, i recently changed my router and i have to get my new one to fake the MAC address to pretend it was the old one then everything worked fine.

Re: Google only connection

I found the problem. When my new cable-modem/wireless router was installed the technician choose WPA security. Vista accepted this security but didn't understand it apparently. When I changed the router setting to WEP128bit and reset the internet connection then it started working as advertised in the glossy pamphlets.
