How do I WAP my router? [moved from general security]

Hi all, sorry if Im in the wrong place, but have just got a laptop, and have a wireless router.#
Netopia Model 3347NWG-006 Wireless ADSL Gateway, and it says "incorporating WEP encryption"
Dont know if that is enough info. anyway, what is WAP, and how do I set it up? am not technical, but can follow instructions, if they are detailed enough.
I have noticed that when i turn on my laptop, it picks up my own wireless signal, and two other weaker signals, from unprotected routers?
Anyway, hope someone can point me in the right direction

If all the router has is WEP encryption, that's all you'll be able to use.

Here's the Netopia Model 3347NWG-00 User's Guide, and it claims to support everything up to WPA2. Perhaps some remedial reading is in order.
