Very odd router/internet issues
<Not sure if this is the right section, sure I'll be moved if necessary!>
Hi all, loathe to take my laptop somewhere to be fixed if there's a simple solution that i'm missing. Right, i'm on XP home edition (2002) with SP3, but installed SP3 after these problems started (was previously running SP2). Intel pentium 1.86GHz Had Threatfire and AVG installed and was able to connect through my family Netgear wireless network fine (through the inbuilt IntelPRO/Wireless 2200BG), uninstalled both these programs and now when trying to connect am unable to (spends a long time on the 'Waiting for the network'/'Waiting for network to be ready' boxes, then quits out and the taskbar icon remains showing Not Connected.). I use Firefox, but IE also displays the usual 'Can't find server' equivalent. I reinstalled both programs, but this hasn't helped. On a related note, the Windows Firewall ICS service also won't work (Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified), although because Threatfire was running fine before I don't know whether this occurred before, after, or simultaneously with the other problem. I followed the Windows advice for dealing with ICS issues (netsh winsock reset) but that hasn't helped, and also the TCP/IP stack reset, but also, to no avail. I am confused because the other computers on the network connect fine. I ran a hijackthis and this is the log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 22:22:37, on 10/09/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZONELABS\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\ThreatFire\TFService.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPLpr.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe C:\acer\epm\epm-dm.exe C:\Program Files\Launch Manager\QtZgAcer.EXE C:\Program Files\Lexmark 5200 series\lxbtbmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Browser MOUSE\mouse32a.exe D:\Winamp\winampa.exe C:\Program Files\ThreatFire\TFTray.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Lexmark 5200 series\lxbtbmon.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE C:\Program Files\acer\eRecovery\Monitor.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cidaemon.exe F:\hijack\HijackThis.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe R0 - Re: Very odd router/internet issues
Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual). Let's see this as well. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Very odd router/internet issues
Ah, well now we get down to brass tacks.
On the working (control) laptop all the services you mentioned are started and mostly set to Manual, so that all looks fine, and the IPCONFIG /ALL command gives me: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unable to query host name. Which is poo. Again thanks for your time, I may be slow in replying as I am in the U.K. and time zones etc. |

Re: Very odd router/internet issues
You need to look at the dependencies in the services that don't start and track back to the reason that the dependency is preventing the service from running.
