Can't access internet through direct router connection

Hi, I have a DLink WBR-1310 router that I'm directly connecting to using a normal ethernet cable. When I connect my computer (Windows XP) directly to my modem everything is fine and I can access the internet. When I connect my computer directly through the router I can't connect to the internet.

My computer recognizes that it is connected to a LAN (it acquires the address when I plug it in), but if I try to repair the connection it can't renew the IP address.

Other computers can access the internet through wireless, so wireless function of the router appears to be working at least.

I tried the TCP/IP stack repair trick with no use, and this is the end of my knowledge.

Did you power cycle the modem when you changed the connection from the computer to the router? That's a MANDATORY step.

Yes, I powercycled the modem. Reconnected the power first in the modem waited for all lights for green, then the router and then finally turned on my computer.

Since you appear to have a valid IP address assigned, let's see this.


Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
