ip problem
Hi,
I have roadrunner cable modem and my ever since my belkin router broke, my ip keeps changing every day because i have a dynamic ip. But When i had my belkin, the lease was till 2038 so it was just like i had a static ip. When i go to tcp/ip properties, i can configure my ip manually, but this is where it is very confusing. When i type in my old ip, subnet and default gateway and press ok and close, i get see my old ip in the command prompt. So i go back to the tcp properities and click obtain ip automatically to enable my dhcp and my old ip is back. But this is not the old ip i want to go back to. I have another one, but when i do the same steps it won't let me go back and instead it gives me a new one. So my main question is, why am i able to back to one of the ips and not the other. I checked and both ips are not taken so why could i connect to one and not the other. thanks |

Re: ip problem
well, its my wan ip, the ip that others see. I talk to roadrunner tech support but it seems they want me to believe that it is not possible to go back to a previous ip i was assigned. But i know for a fact that i was able to obtain 2 previous ips i had from 2 months ago. But the 1 ip that i want back is giving me problems to obtain. And to go further on this, any ip i obtain now, i am only able to get it back if i do so in 5 minutes.
I know that it might just be luck to go back to the 2 other ips but i have a feeling it is something i must have done. But i can't retrace all the things i did when i had these ips in use. Maybe someone here can explain how its possible to get back 2 ips but not any other after a day or so. thanks |

Re: ip problem
I am not sure that you can just change your WAN IP address. If your ISP is giving out dynamic addresses, then you might find your old address has been assigned to someone else. Maybe they would be able to tell you if this is the case.

Re: ip problem
well i talked to roadrunner and they said its impossible. But i know for a fact that it is possible as i can switch between 3 ips whenever i want. But don't know why its only for those 3. Also the ip im talking about is the one that shows on whatsmyaddress.com. I think thats the wan ip?

Re: ip problem
Yeah dats your WAN IP address. It is impossible to predict which IP address that you'll get because its dynamic. the only way to get a static IP address is to lease it which costs $$$$. Before when you had an IP till 2038, it could be that roadrunner were doing something with their DHCP server which gave this lease time.

Re: ip problem
aren't you able to fix the IP in your DHCP server...? if not, then your ISP is the issueing you dynamic addresses and there's nothing you can do except go to them and request them to reserve it for you.
you can't predict the address that you'll get with DHCP, in most cases it will always be different especially if your router is off for some time and someone else joins |

Re: ip problem
i must agree with lazereth. if you didn't pay a lease for your previous ip then the only reason that you could have had that lease is if they were messing around with stuff and u just got lucky. sorry bud but it seems that now if you want the same situation u gotta pay for it now.
