Home Networking with Dynex Router

I recently bought a new router, a Dynex DX-E402. Our previous Lynksys router worked great until a power surge or something fried it. I could connect to teh internet and see all of the computers in my home. I bought the Dynex router because it said it was Vista compatible and also worked with XP. We have computers that each run one of these operating systems. I can get online with no problems using the router, but I can't see the other computers any longer. I've checked every firewall setting and configuration and nothing. I called Dynex and they said it is capable of home networking, but only GeekSquad could set it up for me. I refuse to pay GeekSquad for anything that should be this simple but I am at a loss. Please help.

Hi Jessica!

Without reading their manual, have you tried pinging the IP address of another computer on your network?

The only thing their manual says is how to install for internet access... it's not even a full sheet of paper. I have tried pinging the computer and the request timed out.

just in some internet searches i can tell this is a Command line based router. meaning you hav to console into it or connect via Telnet..

it would then require commands like a cisco router, you can get by entering ? or --help usually.

how about.. the receipt. If you have your receipt you should swap it for another linksys, a dlink or a belkin router. these will hav GUI's and better instructions.

Are both of your computers DHCP enabled? If so then what is the gateway of each (perhaps paste the IPCONFIG output here). Does the router have multiple ports (ie. is it a 4 port model with a WAN port as well)? If it has multiple switch ports then it shouldn't block traffic locally. You could buy a small switch if there isn't multiple ports. Seeing the IPCONFIG output will help us point you in the right direction though.
