Router or NIC Problem?

The Story:

I just brought a Belkin Wireless N Router for my Dell (Its about 3 thru 5 years old). Well the first one I brought and hooked it up to the dell computer via stadard ethernet cable (I think its RJ45 or whatever) and it would try to assign a IP address and then within 10 seconds of trying say that the cable was unplugged. So I called support and we tried everything and they told me to return it to the store because its defective.

So yesterday I brought another and tested it out, now it gives me the IP address 169.x.y.z which has somthing to do with a Private IP or somthing, I forget its been ages since I learned about all this stuff. After hours of trouble shooting they told me its defective and to get another exchange from the store.

Instead I took it over to my friends and tried it on his Compaq Vista computer and I wasnt sure how to check for an IP but when I went to http://192.168.2.1 it worked immdetatly.

Now it dosnt do anything except for the 169.x.y.z thing, I tried to clear out my TCP / IP stack and that did nothing, :(

NOTE: I have tried diffrent cables, I am currently using the yellow cable it comes with which worked fine over my friends house.
I also do not have any wireless adaptors at the moment till my next pay check

An IP address of 169.254.x.x is an APIPA address. In a nutshell this basically means your computer was unable to get a proper IP address from your router, so it gave itself one.

When you access your router's web configuration, make sure DHCP is enabled.
