Remote desktop
Hey all, I live in a different state than my father and he's always needing PC help. Back when i was at home i used a program called "Net Op" to connect over the network from my room to his to square away any issues he had on his pc. Now that i've moved away, i can't figure out for the life of me how to configure network settings to get past his router and to his computer. I know how to get his IP from his ISP, but i do not know how to connect to his PC seeing that he's getting a generic "192.168.x.x" ip through his linksys router. What kind of settings need to be set in order to do that?

Re: Remote desktop
You will need to set up Port Forwarding on the router to forward packets going over specific ports (ie. ports used by your remote administration tools) to a specific private IP address (the "192.168.x.x" address). For example if using Remote Desktop to remotely connect, you will need to forward port 3389 to the appropriate private IP address.
Find out what port (or ports) your remote administration tool uses and forward the ports in your router's configuration page. For more information on how to port forward for your specific router, take a look at this website for step-by-step instructions based on your make and model of router and programs you wish to port forward with. |

Re: Remote desktop
Hedepending on his router, you may only need to set up a remote user id and password.
Create a VPN to the router , and use Remote desktop to connect to your fathers pc. Best to use the name of the computer instead of the ip . Make sure that his firewall is configured for RDP, and tha his comp is set to allow remote session , this can be found in control panel\system\remote\allow remote connections |

Re: Remote desktop
RDP is but one example of many remote administration tools you can use. There is also a variety of VNC tools out there as well which provide similar if not additional functionality. There are a lot to choose from, so pick one which you are more comfortable with which provides an adequate level of security and functionality.
Whichever solution you choose, you will still need to set up port forwarding. Different remote admin solutions use different ports, so find out which ports are used for your preferred flavour. |
