wireless router probz

hi

ok this is a pretty confusing problem

i got a wireless router from my friend after complaining about switch the internet cable from my laptop to my xbox 360 and back. so he gave me a TP-LINK wireless router.

now my laptop gets the connection filly but it says local access only and doesnt connect. i clicked on diagnose the problem and it says primary dns error (ip address)

now im connected to my internet via my brother wired router (linksys)
so i put the internet cable from the wired router and put it into the WAn socket in the wireless router and nothing happens (well the same problems)

then i went and connected the wireless router directly to the modem ignoring the wired router and my brother desktop pc (xp) connected wirelessly to the router but my vista laptop still doesnt connect WHY!!!!

i tried power cycling
i clicked on change ip address, but for some reason i cant change the ip address via ms dos on my laptop something about elevation.

then my laptop wouldnt connect to the internet via my wired router so i had to do a system restore to get my old ip settings na dnow im back on the internet via the wired router

help me please!!!!

Re: wireless router probz

Is that IPCONFIG from a connection to your TP-Link router? What is the TP-Link router connected to?

If you're using a wire from your brother's router to your computer, you just need an Ethernet switch to split the line, not a router. The extra router will throw your XBOX for a loop.

Re: wireless router probz

Normally, the default configuration works pretty well for SOHO routers.

Please review the Tech Support Forum Rules & Conduct, and you'll see we provide no support for P2P applications here at TSF.

Re: wireless router probz

i dont need support for p2p apps, i know how to use them. i need help with the fact that this tp link router slows down the connection of other family member on the network when i use high amounts of the bandwith, whereas before with the linksys wired router this never happend, we all received 400-600kbps, but now when i use the wireless internet they cant even load up the google page properly, oh and another thing, i went on to dos and pinged a few sites on my dad and bro computer and they kept losing packages only like 2 of 4 went and cam back, if u get what i mean

Re: wireless router probz

Stop using the P2P, the problem will go away. Since this is an issue directly related to the use of P2P applications, it's off-topic here.
