EEK! wireless help

I have a gateway computer and it has a wireless card in it i live with my dad and he has verizon internet he dosnt have a wireless router so i can be hooked up too. My mom had an old one but when we tryed it didnt work. can i just go buy any wireless router or dose it have to be special i need to know really soon im a gamer and im going crazy! not having internet!

Why not tell us about the router you already have, are you dying to spend money?

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
