When a PC is first time connected to a switch/hub, how it gets configured to have specific speed, say 10 Mbps? What are the contents of packet that exchanged for this purpose?

That would be done at the physical layer, or perhaps the data link layer of the OSI model: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model
