Idea Router config with 4 static assigned external addresses

I am trying to help a friend's Mom, she's got a office with three pc's. One is already setup for her to access via external ip address, from her home. She wants the rest setup this way. She's got a Linksys router - Model BEFSX41. As far as I can see she may need to get a higher end router. Or should I perhaps try setting up a VPN so her home can access the office via VPN. Not sure what router she has at her home...

Thanks
DMH

Re: Router config with 4 static assigned external addresses

She will most certainly either have to get a more expensive router, or configure each of them independently with different port numbers.

How does she access the one machine now? What does she use to connect?

EEK! Re: Router config with 4 static assigned external addresses

She is currently connecting from home via Remote Desktop Connection to the external IP address of one of the workstations at the office...

Re: Router config with 4 static assigned external addresses

You can configure the port that RDT uses for each workstation to be different, then you can connect to multiple machines using a single public IP address.

Re: Router config with 4 static assigned external addresses

If you have the available static addresses...you can also setup a 1 to 1 NAT for each PC; this will eliminate the need for any port forwarding. Most business DSL connections offer a 5 pack of static IP addresses.

Linksys is not a business class router IMHO.

Re: Router config with 4 static assigned external addresses

One important thing to note is that it costs more money to have additional public addresses. Setting up the port forwarding necessary and setting up RDP to use other ports is far cheaper than having to spend money on getting additional public IP address. If her current plan with her ISP already has additional public IP addresses then that really isn't a problem, but if it doesn't there is no need to spend more money when it can be setup relatively painlessly. The same can be said for static public IP addresses, which are more expensive than dynamic public IP addresses.

All of it can be set up on one dynamic public IP address, which saves a lot of money. While it takes more effort to set up compared to several static public IP addresses, the effort spent will cost $0 additional dollars instead of several tens of dollars every month. This is done through Port Forwarding and Dynamic DNS.

You can use several static public IP addresses (it'll work), but it'll cost a lot more. And setting up Port Forwarding and Dynamic DNS should work on any modern Home/SOHO budget router.

Re: Router config with 4 static assigned external addresses

True it will cost more for the additional IPs if you don't already have them.

Here is the link for setting up port forwarding on your router:
