Using the same cable line on 2 different computers directly(without sharing)
Hi,
I have been having a bit of problem lately. My friend has a cable line and its working perfectly on his laptop. But when I connect that cable line to my laptop, its not working. I know the simple solution will be to use a crossover cable or a router and do a sharing. But I really dont want to use sharing as I will be getting my own line after a month. And besides, the other laptop has only 1 lan port. So I dont want to share but just use the internet sometimes by using his line. I think the line is encrypted and only allows one computer(that is specific). I tried to copy all of the ip settings from ipconfig to my laptop and it connects(usually if i leave it at automatic detect ip, it says problem with acquiring ip address) but even after connecting, it just doesnt receive packets and doesnt browse the internet although it says its connected at 100mbps. Any ideas or workaround to make both the laptops use the same line at different times? Thanks for helping me out. |

Re: Using the same cable line on 2 different computers directly(without sharing)
It's possible that the other PC is logging in using a secure Log-in procedure quite frequently associated with the username and the users password. you could try a modem router to get around this since the router will be primed with the official login.
without having a method of logging your PC in to the ISP you are connected to , I think it will be very difficult to get around .. plus this would also constitute "hacking" the security of your friends ISP connection, something we don't get involved in .

You might tell us enough to offer an intelligent opinion. The make/model of the modem would be a good start, as well as the ISP in question.
Are you turning off the modem when you change the attached device? That's a MANDATORY step.
