port forwarding problem
hi there
I have a billion bipac 7100s broadband modem and i know how to port forward on that. but my bro wanted to share the connection so he brought a d-link DI-524 wireless router and hooked it up to the billion. and now i'm confused port forwarding doesnt seem to work anymore. i tried setting it up but no work. confused about the 2 ips that i would be getting from the 2 routers. i tried looking at a guide for the d-link and it said i needed a static ip for it to work. is that true? and i wasnt able to do that also btw. am i missing something? i'm using vista btw Last edited by z3phyr : 10-23-2007 at 05:16 PM. |

Re: port forwarding problem
No surprise here, port forwarding through two routers is a minefield! If you really want two routers, here's my recipe for connecting them.
Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together. Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address. Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected! This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

Re: port forwarding problem
Note that I mention you access the wireless configuration of the secondary router and configure it as needed. This will work, I have this exact configuration running here. You shouldn't have changed anything on the primary router, the billion bipac 7100s.
Did you follow ALL of the instructions for the configuration?
