Question about networking

Hi, I have shared wireless in my building, a laptop with a wireless card and a desktop without a wireless card. I have no place to plug my desktop into, an up until now I've been using a usb network adapter to share the internet from my laptop, but something's wrong with the adapter got damaged so now I don't have that option. I do have a router that I don't use though, would it be possible to share the internet from my laptop with that? If so how complicated would it be to set up?

Well I've been playing around with it and I have the network set up, only problem is I can't figure out how to have the internet working on both computers at the same time. The only way I can get it to work on the laptop is to remove the bridge from my wireless connection, and when I do that the desktop loses it's connection.

Obviously, the clear way to do this job is indeed with a broadband router.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make and model of the broadband modem.
Make and model of the router.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make/model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP2, Vista, etc.

To put that unused router into action, assuming you have a standard Ethernet connection to your modem, try this.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.

Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I don't have access to the modem though, it's the wireless on my campus. I'm currently picking up the signal with my laptop using a Belkin 54G card, I have a linksys WRT54G broadband router hooked into the ethernet prot on my laptop, and a network set up on both computers. The internet connection on the laptop is WEP encrypted. The only problem I'm having is I can't get the internet to work on both computers at the same time, it's not really that big of a deal though, I don't really need it on both at the same time.

On my laptop I have both enthernet and wireless connections bridged. I don't really know anything about it, I just went through the network setup wizard in xp.

You could use a wireless bridge to receive the signal, then connect to both of them.
