Hiding my "actual" ip address and not just the browser
Hey
Not sure if this is in the right place so feel free to move it if need be. Anyways, I'm having a bit of trouble trying to find a proxy program that will allow me to mask my actual ip address. What I mean by this is: I can mask the ip that shows up in browsers so that when I go to google instead of coming up google uk (where I live) it shows google australia (for instance). But the problem I am having is how exactly to change the ip that appears in my connection status at the bottom right hand corner of my screen. I have several internet programs that I use which still register me as having my regular ip address and as a result I am not able to use them as I would like. Any ideas???? |

There is no local proxy program that can hide your public IP address. The only solution is to use an Internet proxy server, the free ones are painfully slow and limited.

Be very mindful when using anonymous proxy servers, as some are maliciously configured to capture and possibly compromise things you send and receive going through it.

Good point, I knew there was a reason I didn't use them.

Re: Hiding my "actual" ip address and not just the browser
you could configure your programs to use a tor node by downloading privoxy and vidalia then configuring your applications to use 127.0.0.1:8118 as a proxy... will only work for applications that can use proxies and will slow your connection down but will allow you to change your IP at will, with none of them being the true IP.
