[SOLVED] Wireless and lan network, IP and internet problems
Hi guys. First post here. Hope you can help.
Windows XP SP2 on all machines I have a netgear 834PN wireless router modem. I have a laptop that connects wirelessly to router and internet no problem However, I have tried plugging in to the lan port (on the laptop) to network the laptop to another desktop and when I do that the internet connection on the laptop disappears. The laptop has it's wireless IP address (192.168.0.6) and DNS set up manually. I've set the LAN port up with a unique IP address (192.168.0.9) but then set the subnet mask etc to the same settings as the wireless. When I plug in the lan cable, the laptop says it is acquiring an IP address and when it's finished that, the internet stops working on the laptop. If I set the laptop lan TCP/IP settings to automatic, everything is fine except that the LAN port seems to get a completely different IP address (for example maybe starting with the same first quad but then the rest being very different) and then the desktop won't seem to see it on the network.( I guess cos the desktop is set up as 192.168.0.2) Finally (sorry if this is too long a post :-() , if I manually set the lan on the laptop I can network it to the desktop (eventually). Any suggestions greatly appreciated. :-) It's driving me mad. Regards Matthew |

Re: Wireless and lan network, IP and internet problems
Why are you setting up the addresses manually?
Have you tried configuring them all for DHCP, which should work just fine. I'd like to see this from the desktop and that laptop with both set to automatic addressing. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Wireless and lan network, IP and internet problems
Hi John. Many thanks for your reply and suggestions.
There is one problem for me with using DHCP. The desktop machine is also networked to two further computers, purely for the the purposes of running a piece of music networking software called FX teleport. It is a requirement of this software that all machines using it use static IP addresses. So whilst I could have the wireless laptop set to DHCP I have to have the desktop and it's two FX teleport machines set up statically. |
