[SOLVED] DNS settings

Hi, any Idea why my Dads pc will not find a website when you type in the address?

For example if we want google we have to type the I.P address 216.239.59.103 instead of simply typing www.google.co.uk

The pc in question never used to have this problem as I have previously taken it home and put it on my newtork to update his soundcard drivers.

The problem has only started since my dad finally decided to go onto broadband and I installed talktalk with a smartax modem.

It's not the modem that is faulty as I have taken the pc back to my house and put it back on my network and it is doing the same - will connect to a site but you need to type in the I.P address rather than the address.

Have no idea if these are related but the pc wouldn't connect to my netwrok at first as the network card did not have a physical address. I solved this by pure chance in the advanced screen of the network card in device manager and entering a 'value' was that the correct thing to do?

In short what settings do I change so that text (a web address) is converted into numbers (I.P address)???

Any advice would be great

Thank you

Drew

Re: DNS settings

it would appear that s9omething isn't correct with your DNS server IP address ..

the DNS server IP is supposed to be a point that is able to convert web names to IP addresses so if you can only get to a site by knowing the IP address your DNS server isn't set up properly

normally it should work automatically via DHCP .. but sometimes will require to be set to a static IP ..

Re: DNS settings

I have no idea what that means. Sorry.

If I type Ipconfig/all on my pc and my dads pc we both receive the same result for DNS servers which is 192.168.2.1
Does that ring true with what you suggested in your last post?

I don't know an awful lot but I am aware that something isn't right with the DNS server which is why I put the title of my thread as DNS. A friend of mine suggested ipconfig/flushdns but that did not make a difference.

Any ideas how I can get the dns functioning correctly as it once did.

Thank you

Drew

Re: DNS settings

I am completely out of ideas.

I've been into my network connections/ local are connections/ right click/ properties/ tcp/ip/ properties

I've then tried obtain dns server address automatically and that doesn't work so i tried to enter the values for virgin media and that didn't work either.

I've tried a dnsflush and that didn't work.

I really do not know what else to try. the pc just will not recognise domain names.

As i said previosuly, the last time I put the pc onto my network it worked fine, it's only this time round after trying to install the talktalk smartax modem that things have started going wrong. It may be a coincedence and completly unrelated though.

I really have no idea what else to do. I suppose I could just reformat the pc and hope everything goes back to how it was???

I give up!!!

Re: DNS settings

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 & Vista.

For XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

For Vista, Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If that doesn't do it, try this.

Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Re: DNS settings

Will, you are actually a legend!!

Don't know which of those commands fixed the problem but the important thing is it's fixed.

I entered the first command - netsh winsock reset catalog and it said command not found.

I thern tried - netsh int ip reset reset.log and that didn't seem to do anything.

I restarted the pc, opened intrernet explorer and IT WORKS!!!

Just hope it continues to work when I set up Talktalk at my Dads house.

Thanks again Will.

Will = Legend!!!
