[SOLVED] Tracert shows first leg as asterisks

I've searched until I'm now crazy but still cannot find solution to problem:

I've just got a new laptop (Asus A9Rp) and set it up as a client to my desktop on my home network using internet connection sharing (ICS). File and printer sharing work fine. Access to the internet via dial-up modem from the desktop (host) is fine. Access to the internet using the laptop's internal soft-modem is fine. Cannot access internet from the laptop via the desktop using ICS.

I can ping everybody and anything from the laptop through ICS but as soon as I use Firefox or IE to call up a web page and browse the net I get "waiting for www.xyz.com". It doesn't time out and task manager on the host shows huge activity across the LAN but no activity across the dial-up connection to the net.

When I ping www.google.com from the laptop I get a turnaround of about 500ms on all four ping requests (i.e. not DNS problem).

Now when I do tracert www.google.com from the laptop I get the following (ICMP Allow Incoming Echo Requests have been allowed on all NIC's):

C:\>tracert www.google.com

Tracing route to www.l.google.com [66.249.89.99]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 * * * Request timed out.
2 322 ms 312 ms 343 ms 210.213.255.6.pldt.net [210.213.255.6]
3 322 ms 327 ms 343 ms 210.213.255.5.pldt.net [210.213.255.5]
4 322 ms 343 ms 328 ms 210.5.64.253
5 322 ms 312 ms 327 ms 58.71.0.80
6 * 588 ms 593 ms pos3-3.core01.lax04.atlas.cogentco.com [38.99.22
2.205]
7 572 ms 577 ms 577 ms google.lax04.atlas.cogentco.com [154.54.12.194]

8 572 ms 609 ms 577 ms 216.239.43.126
9 619 ms 640 ms 656 ms 216.239.47.236
10 634 ms 640 ms 640 ms 216.239.47.54
11 634 ms 640 ms 640 ms jp-in-f99.google.com [66.249.89.99]

Trace complete.

I've checked the firewalls on client and host and both list Firefox & IE as exceptions. Google is a trusted site under IE internet options and Kaspersky AVP. Noscript has been un-installed in both Firefox's. Brand new cables connect both machines to their Ethernet cards.

I'm completely lost here in the jungle
Any help greatly appreciated

Re: Tracert shows first leg as asterisks

Forget it!

Changed MTU to 1492, DefaultTTL to 128, GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize to 256960, TcpWindowSize to 256960, MaxConnectionsPerServer to 10, Tcp1323Opts to 1, Enable PMTUDiscovery to 1, SackOpts to 1 and EnablePMTUBHDetect to 0

Also under firewall settings, as well as enabling 'Allow incoming echo request' I also enabled the following:
Allow incoming router request
Allow outgoing destination unreachable
Allow outgoing parameter problem
Allow outgoing time exceeded

Now all ok
Big thanks to www.speedguide.net
