Strange Internet Issues

A couple of weeks ago, my Firefox browser stopped connecting after I updated it. I was frustrated and tried to find a solution before giving up and switching to IE at least for a while. Things were okay, although I was missing the use of Firefox (why I didn't come here in the first place, I'm not sure), but then IE puttered out on me too. The wireless internet on my HP Pavilion dv9233cl w/ Vista Home Premium is working, since it can do Windows & HP updates, the weather gadget still shows current temperatures, and programs I use to dl stuff work. I also checked for viruses and spyware/adware with these programs: Symantec Antivirus & Avast Antivirus, Spybot Search & Destroy, Superantispyware, AVG Anti-spyware, and found nothing, although that doesn't entirely mean that there isn't one. These antivirus & antispyware programs aren't able to update anymore, though. The Windows Firewall isn't blocking the browsers. I've tried using restore points and nothing changed. Am I dealing with some extremely ugly virus here that at least 2 programs couldn't detect? I really need someone to offer some help before I end up having to spend money on this.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 and Vista.
For these commands, Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
Reboot the machine.

Reboot in safe mode with networking and see if it works there.

When booted in normal mode, let's see this.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Did it work in safe mode with networking?

The IPCONFIG looks normal, and it appears you have an Internet connection through the router.

I'm guessing this has something to do with an installed application or malware on the system.

How about posting a HijackThis 1.99.1 log?
