Internal Static IP Configaration hiccup

First: I'm pretty sure this belongs in this catorgory

Secondly: I used this site to set my 'static' IP http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

Now then. A static IP is different from a dynamic IP in the way that when I turn my PC on (if i had a static) my ip would always be 132.204.121.233 (made up IP by the way) but if it was a Dynamic IP i would get a different IP everytime, yes?

anyway I followed that sites advice to making a static IP address. It didnt work though. And heres one the reasons why (I think): When it tells you to get your 'DNS' numbers, i had only one number there when i should've had 2 yeah?

Is there any reason why when i did 'ipconfig/all' in the command menu that i only got one DNS number? and how could i find both out without ringing my ISP?

Oh yeah- also in the command menu it said my IP was 192.168.x.x but when i used www.whatismyip.com i got 86.136.xx.xx. Is there a reason why these two IP's are different?

and if you were wondering I want a static IP so i can do port forwarding so I can beat my friend at Zero Hour

You can't assign a static IP address on the public internet address space, that's managed from the other end.

The 192.168.x.x address is a private network address behind a broadband router's NAT layer.

How about you tell us the make/model of any broadband modem, router, and what the version/patch level of Windows you use is?

You only need one DNS address, which normally points to your broadband router if you have one. For instance, here's the IPCONFIG /ALL display of this machine I'm using, and I'm obviously behind a broadband router.

Infact, the extra field for entering a second DNS server is for the simple ability to use it as a fail-over if the primary DNS server is unreachable/down.
